The 1876 cast iron sea nymphs that adorn Washington, D.C. are not the only masterpieces of French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. At the same time Bartholdi was designing this gas-lit fountain, now at the U.S. Botanic Garden, he was also designing his most famous statue. 
Towering over Liberty Island in New York, Bartholdi's depiction of Lady Liberty in the iconic Statue of Liberty has become one of the most enduring symbols of the United States. Today, on his birthday, April 2, 1834, we celebrate Bartholdi's gifts to our nation.
