Beyond the Pane

Teardrop WindowTwo "teardrop" windows like this one ornament a Victorian house in northern Pennsylvania. Have you ever seen anything like it? Window panes come in all shapes and sizes, and building with glass has gone way beyond the pane.

What Do You Know?

  • What is a clerestory window?
  • What is a quatrefoil window?
  • What is a Palladian window?
  • What is a mitered window?

How Architects Use Glass:

  • 12th - 13th centuries, Stained Glass Windows
  • 1903, A Curtain of Glass in NYC
  • 1949, Philip Johnson's Glass House
  • 2007, Amazing Windows at the Oslo Opera House
  • 2012, The Shard Skyscraper in London
